Answer five of the following questions.  Notice there are three groups of questions.  You will answer two questions from two of the groups, and one answer from one group.  You have a choice as to how to build your five questions to answer as long as you stay within those limits.

Length, citations, attachments: Each answer should be 2 substantial paragraphs in length.  Aim for 250-300 words per answer.  Each answer should contain information with citations with page numbers from the textbook throughout the answer, for example (Cherny, page 110).  Please do not use any additional sources.

When you are attaching a document, please use one of the following file types:  .doc, .docx, .pdf, .wpd, .rtf

Answer two question from this group, from chapter 4:

1.  Discuss the notion of Manifest Destiny and its role in the coming of the war with Mexico. How does California figure in that scenario?  The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo marks the end of the war between the United States and Mexico. Discuss its major provisions as they were negotiated and eventually ratified by Congress.

2.  Discuss three important economic, social, and/or political changes in California that began during the Gold Rush period. What long-lasting effects did these changes have on California and possibly on the rest of the United States?

3.  Discuss the first constitutional convention and the major issues it took up. In what ways did the convention reflect the relationship between Americans and Californios?

Answer two question from this group, from chapter 5:

4. Discuss how and why the California economy grew and diversified in the mid-nineteenth century. Which groups of people and which regions benefited most from different types of economic development?

5. How did sectional issues, especially slavery, impact California in the 1850s and what role did the state play in the Civil War that followed?

6. California statehood and its wealth brought about major changes in transportation. Discuss these changes, leading up to and including the construction of the transcontinental railroad.

Answer at least one question from this group, from chapter 6:

7. San Francisco became the premier metropolitan center on the West Coast that reflected the dramatic changes affecting the entire region. What were these larger forces of change, and how and why was San Francisco the primary beneficiary?

8. During the Gilded Age, California experienced some of the same economic, social, and political transformations that occurred elsewhere in the United States. Yet, in significant ways, the state had its own unique variations of these changes. Describe and explain California’s Gilded Age with an eye to comparisons and contrasts with other regions in the United States.
