Each of these stories has, of course, a protagonist and antagonist engaged in a conflict. In “Sweat”, long-suffering Delia deals with her physically and mentally abusive husband who tries to kill her. In “War Dances”, Alexie faces the challenges of being an indigenous person in a white society, and tries to reconcile his place in the world and his love for his imperfect father – who is at the same time funny and wise and an unrepentant alcoholic. “Hell-Heaven” deals with idea of immigration and trying to find a place in a new culture, and the children who are caught between the old and new traditions. It’s about love in many forms (arranged marriages, love that is forbidden, love that is adulterous, etc.). “The Story of an Hour” is about love that is confining and limiting, and “The Yellow Wallpaper” is about love that is perhaps well-intentioned but destructive and controlling – and clueless. In “Where Are You Going . . .” Connie is trying to become an adult woman, and learns too late the dangers that await young women in this culture. Which of these protagonists do you most identify with – or if not that, which do you most admire or find the most compelling? Identify your choice(s), and give a complete and thorough profile of your protagonist(s). Then explain your choice – what do like about the character, and in what ways do you identify with him/her and how do you sympathize with his/her struggle?
