Eight Simple Questions by Arthur Kleinman

The Kleinman questions, developed out of medical anthropology research, are designed to elicit health beliefs and expectations, or concerns, about the illness and treatment. You should be familiar with these questions before conducting the interview. Using the eight simple questions provided by Arthur Kleinman, you should be able to individualize care and understand the person you are caring for. You will interview the person concerning the health problem that he or she considers the most significant. Arthur Kleinman’s eight questions for eliciting the person’s explanatory model (EM) of his or her illness are as follows:

1. What do you call the problem?

2. What do you think has caused the problem?

3. Why do you think it started when it did?

4. What do you think the sickness does? How does it work?

5. How severe is the sickness? Will it have a short or long course?

6. What kind of treatment do you think you should receive? What are the most important results you hope to receive from this treatment?

7. What are the chief problems the sickness has caused?

8. What do you fear most about the sickness?

Introduction:

Cultural assessment plays a crucial role in providing effective and culturally sensitive healthcare. Understanding the cultural values and beliefs of individuals from diverse backgrounds helps healthcare professionals to tailor their care to meet the unique needs of each patient. In this assignment, you will interview a person from a specific cultural group with an illness or chronic condition, using Arthur Kleinman’s eight questions. You will also compare and contrast their responses with your own cultural viewpoint, reflect on the experience, and evaluate the process.

Answer:

In conducting a cultural assessment, it is important to select an individual from a specific cultural group who has an illness or chronic condition that significantly impacts their life. This individual should provide verbal agreement for the interview and be assured of confidentiality throughout the project. To ensure effective communication, therapeutic techniques should be incorporated throughout the interview process.

To review the cultural values of the chosen group, it is crucial to gather information about their beliefs and practices. Reading about the culture beforehand will help in understanding their cultural values. This will involve gaining insights into aspects such as their beliefs about health, illness causation, treatment preferences, traditional healing practices, and family dynamics within their culture. By doing so, healthcare professionals can develop a holistic understanding of the cultural values and norms that influence the individual’s healthcare decision-making.

During the interview, the individual may request the presence of family members. This offers an opportunity to observe and acknowledge the family dynamics within their culture. Understanding the role and influence of family in healthcare decision-making is crucial for providing patient-centered care that aligns with the individual’s cultural values.

After conducting the interview, the findings should be summarized in a typed paper following APA format. The paper should include specific information such as the date and time of the interview, the cultural group identified by the interviewee, and the interviewee’s age, gender, general physical appearance, and any observable physical limitations. Additionally, the paper should present the interviewee’s description of their health problem using Arthur Kleinman’s eight questions and the interviewer’s own cultural viewpoint for comparison and contrast.

In the reflection component of the assignment, it is important to analyze the consistency of the interviewee’s responses with common understanding of their culture. Any inconsistencies should be identified and discussed. Furthermore, the reflection should focus on how the experience helped in clarifying the interviewer’s own views and in understanding the importance of conducting culturally sensitive interviews. If there were differences between the interviewee’s beliefs and the interviewer’s knowledge or beliefs, the response to such discrepancies should be evaluated for its usefulness.

In terms of future interviews with individuals from different cultures, it is important to consider what aspects would be approached similarly and what aspects would be done differently. The assignment should also contribute to the understanding of healthcare values, beliefs, and practices among different cultures, and allow for an evaluation of the learning process.

In evaluating the assignment, one should reflect on whether alternative or more effective ways could have been employed to acquire the same knowledge or understanding. This evaluation allows for the identification of areas where improvements can be made. Additionally, the process can be assessed to identify what went well and what could have gone better, including the most challenging and easiest aspects of the assignment.

Overall, this cultural assessment assignment aims to enhance students’ understanding and competency in providing culturally sensitive healthcare. By conducting an interview with an individual from a specific cultural group and reflecting on the experience, students gain insights into the importance of cultural assessment in healthcare delivery and the need to tailor care to individual patients’ cultural values and beliefs.
