An outline is a helpful way to focus and order your ideas on a topic. Without a plan for writing, you may find yourself veering from the main topic and away from your central argument. There are different kinds of outlines such as

topic outlines and sentence outlines
. You have likely created those in the past. However, for this class, you will be build toward your final essay by creating three versions: a topic outline, sentence outline, and a paragraph outline.

Due Date: Sunday by 11:59 PM

You can utilize your work from our Week 2 Discussion. Make sure to revise and incorporate some of the useful feedback that you received.

RE: Week 2 Discussion

Francis,

Thank you for your post, but I’m still concerned you are too focused on sharing a variety of strategies. I really think you want to call for one sort of comprehensive strategy. What might that be? Then, your paper should really focus on why that comprehensive strategy is best.

Bystander Training to Address Workplace Bullying

My initial broad research topic was “Business Management in Public Health Workplace Bullying.” The peer-reviewed sources I found highlighted the negative impact of workplace bullying on employee well-being, organizational costs, and the need for organizations to cultivate a respectful culture to prevent bullying.

One piece of feedback from peers raised an interesting point – how do we train observers/bystanders to intervene and stop bullying when they witness it? This is an important aspect that my initial research did not deeply explore. Reflecting on this feedback, I have refined and narrowed my research question to: “What are effective strategies for training employees to be active bystanders and intervene against workplace bullying incidents?”

Some key aspects I want to investigate under this refined question:

1. The role and responsibilities of observers/bystanders in addressing workplace bullying.

2. Barriers or factors that prevent bystanders from intervening.

3. Evidence-based training programs to equip bystanders with skills to safely and appropriately intervene.

4. Policies and protocols organizations should implement to support bystander intervention.

5. The effectiveness of bystander intervention in reducing bullying incidents and improving workplace culture.

By narrowing the scope, I can dive deeper into the specifics of bystander training, which complements my initial research on the broader organizational impacts of bullying. This refinement provides a more focused direction while still connecting to the overarching topic of managing workplace bullying. Additionally, exploring bystander intervention aligns with the sources’ emphasis on organizations taking proactive measures to foster a respectful environment.

Potential challenges include finding sufficient research specifically on bystander training for workplace bullying, as much literature may focus on broader workplace conflict (Lassiter et al., 2021). However, principles from bystander training in other contexts like sexual harassment could provide valuable insights to apply.

Task:

Create three outlines by following these steps:

· Include a strong thesis statement that reveals your argument and your three supporting elements.
For example: Active reading should be a primary method of learning because it supports strong communication skills in the workplace, enhances EFL learner’s transition from the native language to the adopted one, and promotes a tangible experience not found in social media engagement.

· Craft a topic outline that includes your working thesis and a bulleted list of your three supporting elements.

· Craft a sentence outline that includes the working thesis and the three topic sentences.

· Craft a paragraph outline that includes the working thesis statement and three substantive body paragraphs. These will become the major sections of your final paper. Within the final paper, you will further expand on these ideas. Each paragraph should open with a topic sentence. A topic sentence delves into one of the supporting elements listed in the thesis. It is a declarative statement that prepares the reader for the ideas explored in the coming paragraphs. In the outline format that you will follow, each of the first sentences in the paragraphs is the topic sentence. Notice how it further expands each of the supporting elements.
For example:  Reading is beneficial because it supports strong communication skills, which is necessary for anyone seeking employment.

· Integrate research into each paragraph. Utilize a paraphrase within two paragraphs and a short-burst integrated quotation within one. When integrating a quotation, make sure to provide context for the quotation. Explain what the quotation reveals, proves, disproves, or elucidates. How does this quotation impact the argument? What hole in the research does it fill?

· Insert APA in-text citations whenever research is utilized in the outline and include APA references at the end of the outline.

· Begin the second and third paragraphs with a transitional phrase. Review the transitions resources in the Week 3 Learning Module.
For example:  Beyond offering strong communication skills, more specifically, reading can also provide the necessary tools for English language learners to learn how to transition to and effectively use the English language.

· A good outline should also indicate alternate points of view, such as other solutions, other causes, or other effects. Dedicate some time to considering counterarguments. How can you disprove them?

· Review the rubric for this assignment.
